In a recent interview for the Creative Leaders Unplugged podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Satu Miettinen, an esteemed professor of service design and the dean of the faculty at the University of Lapland. Satu’s vast experience and unique perspective on the interplay between art, design, and creative leadership provide valuable insights for aspiring designers and creative professionals.

The Intersection of Art and Design

One of the most intriguing aspects of Satu’s career is her ability to navigate the worlds of both art and design. As a creative individual, she often grapples with how to allocate her time between the two disciplines. However, she has come to realize that they feed each other, and exploring artistic contexts can facilitate discussions on challenging and uncomfortable subjects.

Design, on the other hand, comes with the responsibility of providing solutions. Satu highlights the importance of embracing both the big picture and the small details (big D and small DS) in design. While everyone may know the process of iterating, testing, and evaluating, designers need to have tangible design skills such as coding, graphic design, and prototyping to differentiate themselves.

Embracing Diversity in Design

A notable shift in Satu’s recent research is the growing recognition of diversity and inclusivity in the design field. The emphasis on diversifying design teams and addressing white privilege in design has become increasingly important. This positive change signifies a broader awareness of the need for representation in design, ultimately benefiting the field by incorporating varied perspectives.

Creative Leadership and the Power of Listening

Satu’s thoughts on creative leadership stress the importance of building relationships, giving and receiving value, and co-creating ideas. She mentions the power of listening as a crucial aspect of understanding customers and fostering empathy for leaders. The ability to create dialogue with leadership, rather than simply pitching design ideas, can lead to more meaningful and impactful outcomes.

The Future of Design and Satu’s Next Steps

As Satu’s term as dean comes to an end, she envisions a future where she can focus on more creative endeavors within academia. Her next project will be a book of visual essays, exploring how meaningful visual stories can be created.

In conclusion, Satu Miettinen’s insights into the intersections of art, design, and creative leadership offer valuable lessons for those in the creative field. By embracing diversity, fostering empathy, and nurturing the connections between art and design, we can push the boundaries of innovation and create a more inclusive and dynamic world.
